where children were sleeping. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose and spoke to the children's father. good morning, janine. >> reporter: the father told me his family has not slept much but any are breathing a sigh of relief. their little girl was just brought home from the hospital. this is after a truck ran off the road. you can see where the tire marks are here and it ran off the road and plowed down a fence there and smashed into a bedroom. police say the driver of the truck traveling eastbound on taylor veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into an apartment at the villa apartments on 23rd street. now, here's a look at the damage inside. the truck crashed into a room where an 8-year-old boy was sleeping and then a room where a 2-year-old girl was screaming. >> my baby's mother has a lot of scars because of the glass. but fortunately, my baby was no hit with no glass or anything. so she doesn't have any really physical damage but she did hit the dresser really hard. >> reporter: this is 2-year-old nalia. she didn't have a scratch on her and is doing okay. police say the driver

for traffic. live in daly city, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. >>> hours ago in hayward several people ran to escape flames at an abandoned pago t building. this happened about three hours ago off dixon and copperfield avenue. ktvu's tara moriarty is here now. you got there shortly after the fire started. you talked to some of the fire victims. what are they saying? >> reporter: right now, arson investigators are here on the scene -- scene are trying to figure out if this is the case. when a woman came downstairs early this morning, she said the living room was filled with smoke and flames. she and her son ran out. this is video from the hayward fire department. crews say that the top and bottom floors of the apartment unit off dixon street and they got here. firefighters were able to knock it out within ten minutes and prevent it from spreading to other people's homes. the woman who lives here told us that she heard a crashing sound. she believes this fire was done on purpose. >> she describes somebody threw something through the window, may have been a cockt
, is affecting parents and kids all over the country, including right here in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in san francisco with more on how students will honor the victims in newtown -- newtown, today. >> reporter: well, they plan to stand in solidarity with the students by wearing their school colors. behind me here, you can see there is a fence up around this school. that, of course, is gonna be the topic of discussion among a lot of school administrators. many schools have fences designed to keep intruders out. but if they get in, it's questionable how far they can get. california's superintendent expects more discussions about this. he's alerted all 1100 public school districts to reskew safety plans -- review safety plans. >> you minimize the risk as best you can. we can't live in fear and have every school be a closed fortress of some kind. it's a place of learning. >> reporter: some parents say sandy hook elementary had a locked door through the school but a gunman shot his way through it. state legislators say this is vulnerable. >> it's not gonna stop somebody if that's t

complete bay area news coverage, starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> and good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm brian flores. >> i'm claudine wong. it's thursday, we want to start with breaking news we first reported at 4:30 this morning. the investigation is underway in a deadly police shooting in walnut creek. it happened hours ago and we are on creek side drive near 680 with the circumstances that led up to the shooting. >> reporter: police just wrapped up their latest briefing about 15, 20 minutes ago. we are getting new details, we have learned there are now multiple officers involved in this incident which wound up with an parent domestic violence suspect dead. investigators are still onto scene. the presence of police and sonoma -- contra kosta county deputies has decreased but we are learning that incident appears to have happened behind that brick fence you can see in the distance there. police say this may have started as a possible domestic violence incident that ended in gun fire. one suspect dead, nobody else hurt we have learned. we have learned the
